Day 88
When we were kids my parents used to take us on these seemingly endless road trips- hauling us along narrowly winding back roads, over plunging precipices with roaring cataracts hundreds of feet down, through forests arching close overhead. It didn't seem unusual then, but almost every day that drive included at least one ferry boat ride.
It really didn't bother us. In fact, it was usually the best part of the day. We were thrilled to be out of the vehicle- an old suburban with open windows for air conditioning and metal seat-belts that scorched your legs. I've got sepia-coloured memories of my little brother and I playing on the sandy beach, waiting for the ferry to come in, of building rafts from driftwood, lips blue from the glacier fed water. Getting back into the hot vehicle as the ferry docked, laughing as we watched the goosebumps on our arms disappear.
My dad would drive onto the boat and as soon as he put the suburban into park we were out the door again, begging our parents to let us watch the metal gates screech and slam shut. Then the boat would shudder as the motors started up and we'd race to the front, my parents walking unhurriedly behind us, hand in hand and smiling.

It seems the earth realized that the first official day of summer meant that the rain and thunderstorms had to come to an abrupt halt and the sun needed a chance to shine. Who else is just a teensy bit thrilled that we get to trade in our umbrellas for straw hats and sunscreen?

Guess what came today!!! There was a bit of drama when Canada Post lost all my film and my stomach tried to wrap itself around my spleen, but all's well that ends well and it's here!
I had totally forgotten about these images of the Parliament building in Victoria that I shot with my Leica but I love them! The Parliament is lit up so beautifully at night- people from all over the world stop to photograph it.
If you're reeeeeally nice I'll even give you a couple tips that'll help you with night shots like this.... Oh you guys are too sweet- here we go!
a) Use a tripod or at least find a bench or something to rest your camera on. You'll won't start to worry that you have the early stages of Parkinson's and will probably use a lot fewer curse words.
b) Take the shots at dusk- don't wait until it's too dark. That way you get the detail in the architecture AND the lights. Win-win! If left until it's super dark out, the lights will be the only thing that shows up in your shot, which (if we're being honest) looks a lot more DisneyChristmas than historic landmark.
I'd been feeling a little ambivalent towards my Leica lately, and had been thinking about trading it in for a Hasselblad XPan (which is an amazing camera) with a 30mm lens (honest to god, this lens has, like, zero distortion, which is unbelievable for such a wide-angle lens!!!) but now I think I'm just going to need both. I better start saving!

Fog is such a funny thing. It's super hard to photograph on the ocean- unless you have objects at different distances in the foreground (like yesterday's shots with the pier in the background), it ends up looking like nothing. I think that's why I love this one so much. If you look at it for a while, you'll notice that it looks mottled. That, my friends, is wonderful, west coast, pea-soup fog.
Lucky? Absolutely. I think Mother Nature wanted to encourage my waking up so early so I would make a habit of it.

First, a big thank you to our readers in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, the UK, France, Norway, Brazil, the Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark, Australia and Germany. I can't believe there are so many of you! And then, Happy New Year! (confetti! sparkles! fireworks! hangovers? maybe!) This year is already gearing up to be as busy as the last and we're stoked here at Hearts & Photos! Now we just need to figure out how to fit everything in.
This afternoon I was reading one of my favourite blogs, Velokova, (I highly recommend checking it out if you need to be reminded how excellent life and adventures are. This post is especially good. Honest to God, reading it is like mainlining awesomeness) and she talked about using a big calendar to map out your entire year. Brilliant!
I know it isn't just me- time seems to slip past really quickly and it's easy to put off things you've been dreaming of for a long time. Moving to a new place, going on a big trip, making an important career move; somehow these fall into the "Soon" category. Sometimes you need to be reminded to make things happen rather than wait for them to happen (thanks Leah!)
So, this is my New Year's Resolution: I promise to make my life happen and to do the things I dream of doing. (Also, to listen to Gwyneth Paltrow and do a cleanse, although Steve just said his goal was to have more nachos and beer. Hmm...)

I know it's only November 12, but the Nutcracker has already been getting some serious airtime at at our place. It can't be helped. And then, of course, the volume gets higher and higher and the music swells and you really must spin and jump as if you're a ballerina (or ballerino, as the case may be).
I would listen to it year-round if I didn't think Steve would drive off a cliff. Watching the Nutcracker is one of the things I look forward to the most every Christmas. When I was a kid I would stay up late on Christmas Eve and watch it on the teensy old television in my room, holding the bunny ears to get better reception.

Day 54
My friends! I haven't been ignoring you- I've just been out of town. Please, please say that you still love me! If you're on the fence perhaps this will help- part of the reason I was out of town was to bring you more pictures (lots more pictures)! I'll try to post at least one each day for the next couple of weeks. After that, posting to the blog might be a bit more sporadic since I'll be all the way across the Atlantic.
I'll make sure to do mobile uploads of my polaroids along the way, so follow me on Twitter to get the latest updates on our adventure through London and Paris.
When I get back, though, expect me to be a few inches shorter. I haven't been able to edit any gear from my bag, and right now Steve and I have 55lbs of camera equipment!!! My shoulders are already aching at the thought. Last week I was being ruthless- I weighed each piece on my kitchen scale, looked through each camera's portfolio (I organize my photos by camera as well as date, subject and location. Sometimes I scare myself) and begrudgingly decided that I would leave behind my Leica to cut back on weight. Then Friday I got the film back that included this image and the Leica snuck it's way back into my bag. Sigh...

Hi hello! Sorry I've been MIA this week. I went into a butter-induced coma over the weekend and am only now beginning to recover. I've been doing a lot of cooking lately, and I don't seem to understand the meaning of "low fat". Eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce and swiss chard from my garden; creamy goat cheese tart with perfectly flaky pastry; strawberry tarts with homemade vanilla custard.
Geez, Teryn. Ever heard of salad? But mmm... it tastes so good that I'm happy to do a few thousand sit-ups to work it off!
Oh who am I kidding. There will be no sit-ups. If I disappear again, it's because I've relapsed. Really, who could turn down pastry?

Guess who's going to folk fest tonight!! MEEEE!!! Usually Steve and I go together, but he's in Texas until tonight, so I get to bring my brand-new sister-in-law and introduce her to the wonderful world of folk. Don't feel too bad for him though- he gets to come on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The festival got a bunch of our favourite bands this year- Stars, Dan Mangan, Ohbijou, Jordan Klassen and about a million more (I'm tired of typing- just google the folk fest, k?). But I think the best part is being introduced to bands you've never heard of and music styles to which you wouldn't normally listen.
Anyways my dears, I'd love to chat all day, but I must go find a tarp and umbrella since it's supposed to rain tonight. If you're in Calgary, swing by the folk fest and say hi!

Exciting news! Steve called yesterday (that's not the exciting part though - he calls all the time because he loves me!) and said that he had been doing some research on tilt-shift cameras, and happened upon the Rollei SL66. He loves shooting with our Rollei twin lens reflex, and the SL66 looked pretty cool, so he did a quick search to see how much they sold for. He found a few on eBay that were priced pretty high, checked on craigslist, and found nothing in Canada. He was going to give up, but decided to click on a result from kijiji that had come up. Normally we ignore kijiji since it's notoriously crappy- the searches never seem to work, they have a ton of ads, and half the time the ads are expired.
Yesterday it worked. And the camera was in Calgary. The SL66 with 3 lenses, 2 backs, 2 viewfinders, filters, and in mint condition. All for way cheaper than anywhere else. Umm... how could we not buy it?
I can't wait to figure it out and start shooting with it. I've spent hours crawling through flickr, getting more and more excited with what you can do with tilt-shift. Here's one of my favourites:
The other cool thing about the SL66 is that you can actually put the lenses onto the body backwards, and you've got an instant macro lens. How smart is that???
So much better than a stupid old lensbaby!

Day 16
You know those gray, rainy days that make you feel like you just want to crawl back under the covers? Well today is one. I was seriously contemplating shuffling all my work over my laptop so I could work from bed (and nap), but then I remembered that my package from the Impossible Project arrived yesterday with new polaroid film and a Holgraroid! Exciting!!
I really want to get some new images for you guys, so, with the help of a couple gallons of coffee, I'm going to head out into the rain. I've got a Holga to test, a roll in my LOMO to finish off, and 2 frames left on my Hasselblad.

I was seriously contemplating shuffling all my work over my laptop so I could work from bed (and nap), but then I remembered that my package from the Impossible Project arrived yesterday with new polaroid film and a Holgraroid! Exciting!!

I know! I'm sorry! This post is late :( I almost had it ready last night, but a friend called and wanted to go for a run, and it's been so long that I just couldn't say no (although, today my knees wish I had). It was really nice to use my legs again and feel my lungs working. And work they did!
My friend is an ultra-marathoner and in ridiculously good shape. He's such a nice guy, though, that he never makes you feel bad for slowing him down. While I was wheezing and panting, trying to keep up, he was chatting away, going as slow as his mile-long legs would let him.
Anyhow, book. Sunlight. Cozy chair. This is what I'd like to be doing this weekend. What are you up to?
